Singapore Part 2: The Best Things in Life are Free

supertrees gardens by the bay singapore

Check out the free attractions in the wonderful city of Singapore! This entry features a preview of the world's largest orchid display, the world's largest water fountain (also a wishing fountain) in the world, artificial trees that made me remember that I'm just a speck in the universe, and a mind-blowing laser fountain show!

Singapore Botanic Garden and the National Orchid Garden, Cluny Road
With over 60,000 plants in the 60-acre land, you're sure to find at least one Instagram-worthy snapshot to show your friends.

Minus getting a stiff neck, I could look at this all day!

People hang out in the grass with their tikes, some play frisbee, others take photos of animals, this is a perfect place to unwind! Aaaand there's no entrance fee!

There are a lot of Asian plants displayed. My brother and I were exclaiming "ooh we have this at home, remember?" For the Westerners though I think the free part of the park would be more amusing.

The garden is well-maintained! I am amazed at how disciplined the locals and the tourists are. There is barely any trash in Singapore, and no one picks the flowers.

We enjoyed the history of plants display (which I know sounds as exciting as my public speaking club), but we really did have fun! Add a dash of running kids who like to climb huge rocks, spotting squirrels in random trees, it was great!

If you don't like walking around too much, go straight ahead to the The National Orchid Garden. It has the world's largest orchid display. Cool finds include the carnivorous plants and these flower arches, which I'm betting is a lot of tourist's profile photo on Facebook right now.

The mist house!

Yeah this would be a good spot to ask your significant other to be your girlfriend. If she says no, let the pretty flowers comfort your aching heart.

Fountain of Wealth, Suntec City
We took the train to eat merienda and check out a very special water fountain. This is the biggest water fountain in the whole world! And you can make a wish with fellow strangers!

The instruction says you make a wish, touch the water while walking around the fountain three times.

Safe Singapore
We took the train a lot since it's cheaper than taking a cab. It's clean, their rush hour is adorable compared to the Philippines, and there are loads of CCTV cameras inside the station!

My cellphone was in my backpack pocket most of the time. I was mimicking how the locals move, none of them (at least from my observation) were clutching their bags or were walking briskly even at night.

Our very paranoid parents were concerned about our safety so I had to remind them that this country is super safe compared to our home town, they have nothing to worry about.

Gardens by the Bay
Our favorite part was the super trees! Normally you can go up the bridge to get closer, but since it rained, we could only admire it from the view deck, and directly below it (see 2nd photo!)

The trees also have a light show with these trees, the last one had Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."

We were talking about how small Singapore is "a dot on the map" and yet it's very well-developed. I also had another existential crisis attack while looking at the trees and feeling very small. Later after the trip, my friend comforted me about my worries saying "the future does not exist."

Marina Bay Sands
We walked from the super trees to catch the light show! The rain meant a reflective floor which was a perfect background for my brother! The light show was still about 15 minutes away, our feet were throbbing from the pain. See my brother does Muay Thai, meanwhile I was err just wearing uncomfy boots. The floor was too wet so we went to the mall and sat under the Christmas tree. So classy!

Finally! 'Tis time for the pew pew pew laser lights and fountain show! We sat on canvas bags since the floor was wet and dirty. Other tourists used brochures as seats. Genius!

The show was so mesmerising I actually had goosebumps watching the whole thing!
